Healthy Eating at Every Age: Helpful Diet Tips for Seniors
As we grow older, our bodies begin to go through many changes. Sometimes, it can seem like we grow tired much more easily, and that we generally don’t function like we once did in our younger years. However, so much of the way we feel is due to our diet, and we can make it easier on our bodies to handle growing old by selecting foods that promote healthy aging.
The phrase we’ve heard our whole lives – “You are what you eat” – rings true and even moreso as a senior citizen. Knowing how to supplement our daily diets with healthy, nutritious foods and plenty of water will be an overall improvement to our lifestyle. Committing to sensible eating habits is the best way to ensure that we are giving our bodies what we need to thrive in the golden years and always be able to make the most of each day.
Start with Water
The starting point to being nutritious and health conscious is to drink plenty of water. As a senior citizen, it is absolutely crucial to stay hydrated and drink water throughout the day. There are so many positives to hydration, including eliminating the risk of daytime fatigue. Also, many emergency hospitalizations in seniors are caused entirely from a lack of water.
If we are exercising on a regular basis as we should, it is also important to stay hydrated so that we gain all of the benefits of breaking a sweat. Thirst is often confused for hunger, and a good way to shed a few pounds is to drink a full glass of water before eating a snack or meal, for you will be less hungry.
Feed Your Body What It Needs
Sometimes, it can seem frustrating to have to change our regular dietary routines that we have relied upon for years. But it can be surprisingly simple to add simple nutritious foods to our diets that will help our bodies and minds in our old age.
Some easy ways to add healthy habits to your meal-making include:
- Look for the rainbow! Healthy foods are often colorful, and having all of the colors of the rainbow on your plate is a step in the right direction.
- Cook your own meals
- Read the nutrition labels and go for products with the least ingredients – raw is best!
- Substitute unhealthy ingredients of your favorite foods with less or none of the product, such as salt, sugar, and dairy products. You’ll hardly notice, and you’ll be healthier in no time!
Knowing the ways to make healthy decisions in our day-to-day lifestyles by staying hydrated and eating right is guaranteed to make us feel young and full of life, even as we age!
